Self publishing

More about self publishing

There is still quite a lot of confusion out there over what the term 'self publishing' actually means. It's really quite simple though. If you are both the author and publisher of a book then you're a self publisher. You own all the rights to the book or books you write and publish, which means you can license them to foreign publishers, sell the film rights or distribute them as ebooks. The only difference between you and a traditional publisher is that all the books you publish are written by you.

If you want people to be able to buy your book in bookshops and online you'll need to buy some ISBNs from Nielsen and register them in the name of your publishing company. (If you choose to buy ISBNs as part of your Infinite Authors package we will purchase the ISBNs and go through the registration process on your behalf.) Once you've done this your books will appear on the databases of booksellers and can be ordered by anybody worldwide.*

What we offer

We believe that since every creative work is different and every writer is an individual a one-size-fits-all package doesn't apply to writers. With this in mind we have tried to create as flexible an offering as possible. We have a £1,295 offer which will give you ,all the basics you need to get your book looking good and make it available to your readers. If you wish you can add other services to this offer. Alternatively, go completely à la carte. We have a range of services for you to choose from, including:

  • Editing,
  • Proofreading,
  • Cover design,
  • Indexing,
  • Page layout,
  • ISBN registration,
  • PR campaign,
  • Marketing,
  • e-book,
  • Tattoo of your book jacket on your forehead,
  • Airship tour of every major conurbation.

The point of this is that we're offering flexibility. Buy the services you want and ignore those you don't. If we're not offering something you need just pick up the phone and tell us.

Finally don't forget to claim your free e-book, Get Published. It explains a lot about the publishing industry, including self publishing and vanity publishing, and is an all round good read. Simply email getpublished@infideas.com and include 'free e-book' in the subject line.

*Some companies will offer you a single ISBN from a block they own. This means that on all the databases they'll be registered as the publisher of your book and strictly speaking that's not self publishing. Check out their terms and conditions: if it specifies that you are still fully entitled to sell rights (e.g. foreign language, film) you're probably fine. Be careful and don't go losing rights to your intellectual property for the sake of a few hundred quid.
