Cellulite Massage Therapy

Clinical trials have shown that endermologie, a deep massage therapy, can minimise lumps and bumps and reduce thighs by inches.

You need a few spare coppers to take the salon route to cellulite-busting. But if you're rich - or frustrated - enough, one treatment in particular may reap rewards.

Cellulite busting miracles are hard to come by. That said, if you're serious about shifting cellulite, and are overhauling your eating habits, taking more exercise, and adopting all sorts of new bathtime rituals such as body brushing and self-massage then a salon treatment can certainly yield positive results.

The key is to be realistic in your expectations. Most therapists concede that a one-off session isn't going to make a big, lasting difference; all require a long-term course to show any real results. One in particular may help you turn a corner.

Endermologie is a special form of deep tissue massage from France, which uses a machine to stretch, stimulate, deep massage and smooth the contours of body fat, thereby reducing the circumference of the thighs or other areas of the body.

It was originally developed in the late 1970s in France to soften scar tissue and enable the skin to heal better. Researchers then went on to discover that using it to treat people for cosmetic purposes showed an improvement in skin texture and body contour.

Endermologie's a machine-based treatment designed to get to work on the fat pockets that lie beneath the surface skin and which cause you all those problems. As the machine rolls back and forth across the cellulite-ridden area, it sucks in the skin, which help loosen and break down some of the fat cells. It also helps boost circulation, and stretch the collagen fibres making them more elastic. Meanwhile, the fat is spread into a smooth layer, reducing the lumpy, bumpy appearance.

What happens at a session?:

Once you've undressed, the therapist helps you don a sort of elasticated body stocking (it's not a great look). Then, using a sort of hand held machine, almost like a dustbuster-cum-iron, she massages the skin. Sounds painful doesn't it? Amazingly, it isn't. In fact given that the machine is giving your wobbly bits a thorough pummelling, endermologie is actually pleasant. The pain comes when it's time to pay! This 35 minutes or so will set you back about £70.

Any good?:

The good news is, on paper at least, results do seem impressive; in the US, the FDA (Food and Drink Administration) approved Endermologie as an effective temporary treatment for cellulite. It's one of only a few cellulite treatments with this kind of official endorsement.

In trials, testers found it reduced the circumference of their thighs and hips, and it was also found to decrease the thickness of the skin. One US study showed that after having seven treatments, patients lost about 1.34cms from their thighs - and these results were effective even if the patients hadn't actually lost any weight. What's more, 31 patients who completed 14 sessions showed an even bigger average reduction of 1.83 cm.
