Allergy Treatment Guide
You may not see your allergy trigger when it strikes, but it soon lets you know that it's around, as itching, swelling, redness and watering eyes quickly become the focus of your attention and of your misery.
It's now estimated that in the UK approximately one in four people will be affected by an allergy at some time in their life. Over the past fifty years or so the number of people suffering with allergies has increased dramatically and doesn't show any sign of slowing down.
Nobody is sure why allergies are on the increase. Popular beliefs about pollution, poor diets and our lives being over-hygienic are still only theories. Only time and extensive research will provide a clear explanation. Until that wonderful dawning is upon us it's important to do what we can in the battle against our allergies.
Whatever allergy you may have, whether it be hayfever, perennial rhinitis, food allergy, latex allergy, eczema or asthma, if left to its own devices it will interfere with your life in one way or another. Maybe it will be just an occasional nuisance, but it may take over your life, stopping you from doing what you want to do and being who you want to be. And that is why it's important to do whatever you can to avoid becoming a victim of your allergy.
There are lots of simple lifestyle changes that will help you to keep your allergies at bay, which will put you firmly in the driving seat. These lifestyle changes may not work overnight, but given time and your continued efforts they'll help you succeed in achieving your goal.
And that's what this book is all about. It's not about scaring you so near to death that you give up and cocoon yourself away from the world at specific times of the year (or all year round for that matter). It's about the principles of allergy management, and how simple but effective ideas, 52 of them to be precise, can help you to take control of your allergy.
Some of the ideas need you to make a little bit of effort, others need no more than you to be willing to give them a try. Many of them may make you think, 'Surely this can't make a difference?' Once you've tried them, you'll see that they can. Whilst trying the different ideas, you should have fun. None of them are meant to punish you. Putting the ideas into practice will not leave your pockets empty either, but they may leave you with a smile on your face.
Every day, what you do impacts on your health. It either makes it better or makes it worse. Keeping healthy is actually very simple. Healthy eating, regular exercise, not smoking, not drinking too much alcohol and keeping stress under control are the basics of good health. On paper it's easy, but what is much harder is putting all these principles into practice, and then sticking to them.
This is why making small but effective lifestyle changes works. They are straightforward to do and they slip easily into everyday life, quickly becoming part of your normal daily routine. Before long you'll be reaching for your shades, vacuuming with glee, taking five minutes to relax and doing much, much more without even having to think about it. And as an added bonus, it isn't just your allergies that will benefit - your overall physical and emotional health will improve too.
If you are worried that this is a textbook about allergies, relax. It's not. And before you ask, the only tests will be those you set yourself. This is a book that I hope offers you practical and common-sense advice about how you can keep your allergy under control so that instead of being excluded you'll be able to enjoy life to the full. I have many years of professional experience of allergy, and some personal experience too, and know how having an allergy can interfere with a person's life. I've learned about what works to keep allergies under control and what doesn't, not only from other doctors, but also from my patients, who have been kind enough to share their ideas with me. I've also seen the look of relief and, dare I say, pride on the faces of those who've been able to say 'I don't have any symptoms, I've got my allergy under control' as a result of them putting ideas like these into practice.
I can feel that you're ready to get started. So off you go, and enjoy.
