Rod Phillips is a professor of history at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He has written a number of books on European history, and since the late 1990s have been working on the history of food and drink. His books in these areas include A Short History of Wine (London: Penguin, 2000; New York: HarperCollins, 2001; six foreign-language editions), Alcohol: A History (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2014; French and Korean editions published, other foreign language editions in production, and named a Book of the Year for 2014 on Jancis Robinson’s web site), French Wine: A History (Berkeley: University of California Press, forthcoming October 2016). In addition he is General Editor of Bloomsbury’s forthcoming six-volume A Cultural History of Alcohol. He writes on wine for the popular and trade wine media and also judges in wine competitions in Canada, Europe, and elsewhere.
